At Aldbrough Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language is an essential part of our curriculum, as it broadens pupils’ horizons and deepens their understanding of the world. We live and work in a culturally diverse and globally connected society, and the ability to communicate in another language is an invaluable life skill.

We teach French to all pupils in Key Stage 2 in an exciting and engaging learning environment. Through high-quality language teaching, pupils are given opportunities to develop their linguistic competence, confidence and curiosity about other cultures.

Our French lessons enable children to build progressively on their knowledge, improve their communication skills, and explore similarities and differences between English and French. Pupils are encouraged to apply their language skills in a variety of contexts, helping them to make meaningful comparisons between languages and cultures. We aim to lay strong foundations in language learning so that pupils are well prepared for further study at Key Stage 3.

The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill. Alongside growing confidence and independence, learning French supports future opportunities in education, employment and leisure, both in the UK and internationally.

Curriculum Aims

Aldbrough Primary School’s French curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Foster an interest in language learning by teaching French in a way that is enjoyable, inclusive and accessible to all pupils.

  • Develop an awareness of cultural diversity and make comparisons between French culture, language and their own.

  • Enhance teaching and learning across the wider curriculum by making meaningful cross-curricular links.

  • Lay secure foundations for further language study at Key Stage 3, in line with national expectations.

Curriculum Content

At Aldbrough Primary School, we believe that modern foreign language teaching should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language. The language taught is French, although pupils may occasionally be introduced to basic vocabulary from other languages where this supports topic work or themed curriculum days.

Our teaching provides a balance of spoken and written language, with a strong emphasis on speaking and listening. This approach enables pupils to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in French, focusing on familiar and routine situations. Pupils develop their understanding of phonics, vocabulary and basic grammatical structures, which supports accurate pronunciation and confident communication.

French is taught in line with the National Curriculum for Languages at Key Stage 2, ensuring that pupils make appropriate and progressive outcomes.

Pupils are taught to:

  • Listen attentively to spoken French and show understanding by joining in and responding.

  • Explore the patterns and sounds of the French language through songs, rhymes and stories, linking spelling, sound and meaning of words.

  • Engage in conversations by asking and answering questions, expressing opinions and responding to others.

  • Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.

  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand them when speaking or reading aloud.

  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences.

  • Read carefully and demonstrate understanding of words, phrases and simple texts.

  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French.

  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop strategies to understand new words, including the use of a dictionary.

  • Write words and phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences.

  • Describe people, places, things and actions both orally and in writing.

  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to French, including gender (masculine and feminine), key sentence structures, high-frequency verbs, and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Through our French curriculum, we aim to inspire pupils, develop their confidence as language learners, and equip them with skills that will support their learning beyond primary school.
