Intent

At Aldbrough Primary School, “Community, Care and Excellence” are at the heart of everything we do. We recognise and value each child as an individual and adapt our learning journey to meet the needs of our children, offering an excellent education underpinned by a broad, balanced and powerful curriculum. Our curriculum ensures that our children become resilient, ambitious and curious learners who are well equipped for the next stage of their educational journey as well as their future lives. Our children are immersed in a rich, stimulating and motivational learning environment which inspires them to achieve their full potential, not just academically, but in all aspects of their lives.

Implementation

We follow a ‘book-based curriculum’ using high quality texts throughout all year groups and linking all subjects where possible, teaching lessons that are engaging and purposeful. All lessons, whether or not they are linked to the text, have clear subject specific learning objectives, including a balance of skills and knowledge-based objectives.

Enrichment opportunities within the school spark interest into the curriculum and beyond, beginning with enrichment days at the beginning of topics, during which teachers “hook” the children into their text for the half-term. We also have regular visitors, school visits, subject specific enrichment days and weeks and extra-curricular clubs. Our commitment to extra-curricular activities is recognised in our awards for both P.E and Music.

Creativity and teacher expertise is woven into the curriculum with specialist teachers and outside agencies working with pupils and teachers, sharing good practice, and ensuring that learners learn from the best.

Our phonics scheme ‘Letters and Sounds - Little Wandle’, which is a government approved version of phonics teaching, and our mastery approach through ‘Maths No Problem’ in KS1 and KS2 and ‘White Rose’ in EYFS both fully support our curriculum intent.

Impact

Monitoring of the curriculum by subject leaders and the Senior Leadership Team through pupil voice, data, planning, “book looks”, environment audits, learning walks, discussions with teaching staff, pupils and parents, support our expectation that children make good or better progress in all subjects. In cases, where children are identified as making less than expected progress in English and Maths, interventions are put in place to address gaps in learning.

In other subjects, pupils, parents and staff are consistently and regularly consulted about the curriculum and the impact that it has.

The desired outcomes of the curriculum will ensure that pupils are ambitious, independent and ready to embark on their secondary school education and beyond. They will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to embed a life-long love of learning.
