PSHE and RSE
At Aldbrough Primary School, we value Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) as a way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme.
The principles of PSHE education are embedded throughout the curriculum. PSHE is taught in weekly sessions and supplemented in whole-school assemblies and when appropriate, in specific classes. Where the classes are mixed year groups, a two-year cycle is implemented to ensure full coverage, adapted to meet the specific needs of each cohort.
Our PSHE scheme of work ‘Jigsaw’ holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips teachers to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.
The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area. An overview of the programme can be viewed at the bottom of this page along with other documents outlining Aldbrough’s approach to PSHE.
