This term, the book we are studying is 'Holes', by Louis Sachar. To help them empathise with the characters in the book, on the first day back after Christmas, the pupils in Banksy Class were told that they had been enrolled at 'Aldbrough Juvinille Correctional Facility' and that they would be digging holes all day every day for the next 6 months...

In October, year 6 visited Hornsea. Based at Hornsea Inshore Rescue, we learned about sea safety, the role of emergency services on the coast, what to do in an emergency, visited the Eco-hub, carried out a beach clean and looked at the impact that humans have on their environment.

 

At Hornsea Inshore Rescue we learned about how to stay safe on the coast and how the emergency services processes a 999 call.

 

We simulated a real emergency and reported a (hypothetical) missing person. We watched as the lifeboat crew arrived at the station and proceeded to launch the lifeboat!

 

We followed the lifeboat from the station to the shore where it launched and proceeded to the location we had reported our missing person – the northernmost special marker buoy.

 

Once the lifeboat launched, we went to the control tower and called the lifeboat up on the VHF radio. Using official VHF protocol and the NATO phonetic alphabet, we  directed the lifeboat to a new location – the southernmost special marker buoy.

 

Once the lifeboat was in the correct position we made contact with them again and asked them to demonstrate a MOB (Man Overboard) exercise just west of their current location. We watched the exercise from the tower and then told them they could recover the lifeboat.

 

After the lifeboat had safely recovered, we helped wash the boat and prep it for its next launch!
